How to Stop Your Dog from Nuisance Barking at the Window
Published by Canine Mind & Manners Editorial Team

If every delivery driver, mail carrier, or passing dog triggers an ear-splitting barking frenzy from your living room window, you are not alone. Window barking is one of the most common behavioral frustrations reported by pet parents.
To solve window barking, we first need to understand why dogs do it. In the dog's mind, their barking successfully chases away the mail carrier every single time. The mail carrier walks up, the dog barks, and the mail carrier walks away! Thus, the behavior is heavily self-reinforcing.
1. Block the Line of Sight
The simplest immediate fix is management. Use frosted window film on the bottom half of your windows or rearrange furniture so your dog cannot easily perch and survey the street. Out of sight, out of mind.
2. Train a Reliable "Place" Command
Teach your dog that when the doorbell rings or someone passes, their job isn't to patrol the windowโit's to go to their designated mat or bed. Reward them heavily when they hold their position on the mat.
